Live Review

Sectionals, The Ra Ta Tas and The Wet Suits at It’s Still a Secret

Sectionals new single Red Hills Hoist is a playful serenade to the beloved Meanjin suburb.
Bassist and lead singer Kriza Canzon narrates conquering the hills of Red Hill, “Should have
known from the beginning/It’s in the name of the ‘burb that I live in”
. It’s been a year since the
band’s last single Deep Clean, and with the addition of rhythm guitarist Max Dooley, there was
much anticipation for fresh material.

It’s Still a Secret in West End may be across the river from the burb’ of choice, but packed tight
with friends and family under the shimmer of the resident disco ball, Sectionals single launch
felt like we’d been transported into the familiar walls of a decked out Red Hill Queenslander.

On the lineup was The Wet Suits, a fresh five-piece full of energy and quirk that hit the ground
running. Sectionals were also joined by The Ra Ta Tas, a vibrant femme act. It was clear
witnessing their first live set that the band is stacked full of seasoned musicians, one such being
Sectionals guitarist, Shannon Tighe. Ra Ta Tas keys player, Cleo Shave, would also later jump on stage and join Sectionals for a song.

Sectionals has all the energy and enthusiasm of a freshly formed DIY act, with a tight, well
practiced sound that proves they’ve been together and playing live for some time. Shannon Tighe has been with the band from its inception, every riff is personal and every lyric is sung, not even into the mic, just out of passion. Kriza is a powerhouse, both in her fun melodies and fingerpicking bass and the seamless switch between lead singing from Kriza to drummer and vocalist Zach Brankovich had the crowd buzzing.

Red Hills Hoist tells an all too familiar story of Brisbane heat, and would make an awesome video
clip. Check out Sectionals' collaboration with Reverse Garbage on the song It’s Good to Recycle.
In 2022, the band made a music video gathering and upcycling used materials from the co-op
warehouse, producing a set of wild recycled instruments. Much like the themes explored in Red
Hills Hoist
, this clip is a little slice of Brisbane nostalgia.

Following news that It’s Still a Secret’s will close in August, any chance to head into its live room is a
pleasure. The venue is nurturing in essence, both in its warm and maximalist design, as well as
its impact on the community, continually striving to uplift local bands. Selling out the 140 capacity room was a well deserved achievement for Sectionals, the single is fun and bubbly and so was their
stage presence.
