Cinematic

Cinematic has arrived at the Concert Hall, QPAC for its fifth installment bringing the world class Queensland Symphony Orchestra to the forefront to present an impressive repertoire of film favourites over the last few decades to unite both music and film fanatics alike. Nicholas Buc takes the audience on a journey through a range of orchestral compositions from classic superhero themes such as Theme from Batman and Superman March to well-loved animated flicks such as The Lion King Orchestral Suite and How To Train Your Dragon to romantic period piece dramas such as Theme from Pride & Prejudice and Downton Abbey Suite which left the theatergoers feeling a range of emotions from start to finish.

Cinematic was especially entertaining to watch given the fact that the instrumentalists were dressed up in costumes of their favourite film characters! Nicholas Buc demonstrated his expertise on stage as both a Conductor and Host for Cinematic, which enabled him to orchestrate the performance itself but also guide the attendees through the repertoire. Buc was central to providing contextual information at key intervals, enabling the viewer to draw connections between the pieces and overarching themes to the performance.

Cinematic enraptured audiences with a number of impressive violin solos, the pipe organ which had taken the spotlight in No Time for Caution from Interstellar and an arrangement that brought the Bassoonists from the Woodwind Section to the forefront. The second half of the performance featured Soloist Daniel Le on the Grand Piano, who had played a number of arrangements that were especially designed for the piano, such as One Summer’s Day from Spirited Away and Feather Theme from Suite from Forrest Gump. Overall both halves were thoroughly enjoyable to watch and made for an excellent fifth installment to the series.

Featuring the likes of Hisaishi, Zimmer and Shore there was something there for everyone and made for a fun night for the whole family, and served as a suitable date night option for the younger folk in the crowd. Thanks to Buc’s expertise in tieing both halves of the performance together with his insightful explanations that would set the tone for the collection of compositions that were to follow, the evening flowed smoothly and left the audience wanting more. Cinematic serves as a much needed yearly appointment to reminisce about some of the greatest screen compositions of all time and the very films that brought them to life.
